Grooming can be scary for your pet, especially the first time. It is important to find a groomer you trust, so you pet feels comfortable. At Bryan Animal Clinic in Decatur, AL, we want to make the grooming process easy for you and your pet. We offer a variety of grooming services to keep your pet clean and healthy, including baths, nail trims, anal gland expressions, and ear cleanings. We can address any concerns you have about the grooming process. Here are some commonly asked questions.
How Often Does My Dog Need to be Groomed?
We recommend every four to six weeks for dogs that are of a non-shedding breed, such as Bichons, Shih Tzus, Poodles, and Terriers. These dogs can go anywhere from eight to ten weeks in between grooming sessions if their coats are kept very short. Other breeds that have shedding coats can go anywhere from eight to 12 weeks between appointments, as long as their coats are regularly brushed at home.
How Often Does My Dog Need Nail Trims?
Nail trim services are available at our facility. We recommended nail trims every 6 weeks.
How Long Does Grooming Take?
We ask that you schedule grooming appointments in advance. We will do our best to find the most appropriate day and time to accommodate your request. Baths with no nail trimming can take one and a half to two hours. A bath for a larger dog or a dog that has a lot of hair can take two or more hours. If your dog’s fur is matted, this may take more time.
Can My Senior Dog Be Groomed?
Special care and attention are required for older pets. This is why we highly recommend that any style you choose for your older dog be short and easy to maintain. This helps to maintain a minimum amount of time during the grooming process.
What If My Dog's Fur Is Knotted?
If your dog’s fur is knotted or matted, it is possible to de-matt the coat only if it can be done without causing pain. This is sometimes painful process that can result in skin irritation. We will discuss what your options are if your dog is matted. Matted fur can result in many health and skin issues. If your pet is extremely matted, the risk of trauma, stress, and injury increases. We may need to shave your pet’s fur if it is too knotted.
