Endoscopy

Pet Endoscopy and Bryan Animal Clinic

It is no surprise that pets get sick and often need some sort of care to get them better. For those that have a pet with digestive issues, an endoscopy may be in order. If you live in the Decatur, Hartstelle, or Madison, AL area our veterinary staff can help.

What is an Endoscopy?

Endoscopy is the use of a small camera to view the interior of the digestive tract. The endoscopy takes a small endoscope that is either inserted in the rectum or the throat, depending on what part of the digestive tract the doctor is trying to view. This means that if the doctor is concerned with the colon only or the lower digestive tract, they are most likely going to go in rectally whereas if they are looking at the stomach or the upper digestive tract they may go in through the throat of the animal.

What is an Endoscopy Used For?

An endoscopy is going to be used to help both identify and diagnose digestive issues in pets. Say your pet has swallowed a toy and it has passed but your pet is still passing blood or still acting strangely. Your veterinarian might decide to use the endoscopy to determine if there is any damage in the digestive tract. Similarly, if your pet is having trouble eating or is dealing with stomach issues, the veterinarian will help determine if an endoscopy is necessary to see just what is wrong and to figure out an effective course of treatment is.

What is the Endoscopy Process?

If your pet will require an endoscopy the owner will need to either leave your pet at the doctor’s office until the procedure to allow the veterinary staff to prep their pet or you will need to withhold food for an interval of time. Our veterinarian can better discuss with you the best care for your pet that will allow you and your pet to be prepared for the procedure.
